Friends of St Catherine's Church

The Friends of St Catherine’s Church is up and running!! At the inaugural meeting on 3 June the aims and objectives of the Group were outlined, why at this time the Church needed support and how the wider community could provide that support. The meeting was told that the Group would, by fundraising, initially seek to cover the present deficit in the Church’s regular expenditure, but in the long term look to provide the funds needed for the repair and renovation of the Church roof. Those who were willing to contribute by way of a regular standing order in favour of the Church were encouraged to do so.

Events

The first Friends event will be the Summer BBQ in Highlees wood on 17 July from 5pm until 9pm. The response has been overwhelming!! Tickets went on sale on 10 June and within a week the event was sold out! We have extended the capacity to 100 to accommodate the waiting list, but fear that many will still be disappointed.

Following the BBQ event, we trust that all within the community will support the Annual Village Fete and Fun Dog Show, which this year is contemplating a game of Prison Bars between neighbouring parishes. For those who missed Ray Walker’s excellent talks on the Black Greyhound, this is a Victorian game of group tag which was regularly played between parishes at the Whitsun holiday on the fields behind the Black Greyhound (then a public house). We thought it was about time we revived this tradition!!

In September Cinema Club returns to the Church, running though to early Spring. We will also be holding further fundraising events (auction, race night etc) through the Autumn and in Spring next year a fashion show at Sandy Lane tearoom is planned.
